Willie Mays Signature Deemed Likely Not Genuine
This is an auction that is currently on eBay, a Mays bat with a lot of inscriptions on it. One of our readers sent this to us as they paid for a PSA-DNA Quick Opinion and PSA deemed this item as "Likely Not Genuine".

We have contracted with Mr. Mays for two public appearances in the last few years and we have seen him personally sign a lot of stuff. To us, the main signature actually looks very close to Willie's signature, but the inscriptions don't look right. Below is a picture of a bat we had signed, it is kind of hard to see because we had to resize the picture:

1. Willie Mays autographs always come with his personal hologram, especially something as rare as this.
2. Willie DOES NOT like to put this many inscriptions on a bat because he knows what it is worth with those on there.
3. The seller ( randy279 ) makes no mention of where this item was signed.
4. Willie Mays always limits the number of bats he signs because he does not like too many bats on the market.
5. The inscriptions do not follow Willie's style of handwriting based on inscriptions he has signed for us in the past. His inscriptions are usually very choppy and they are not as neat as the ones pictured above.

I absolutely agree. The autograph looks pretty good but there is no way those inscriptions are authentic. I have rarely seen Mays inscriptions on items and the ones on this bat dont even follow his handwriting pattern.
Hi, I have a Willie Mays M&N Auto. jersey. That I personally got at the san diego show where he attended . He signed my jersey with my personal red sharpie that I took. He signed willie mays and inscribed "Say Hey Kid" under his name. THE "SAY HEY" on the bat LOOKS LIKE MINE. BUT THERE IS NO KID,on the bat. The only authenticator at the san diego show was global which I paid $6.00 for. You mentioned he only signs and puts his own personal hologram on the items he signs, not true. I took pics of him signing "say hey kid" under his name w/ a red sharpie. I spoke to the guy from global that was present to put the inscription that willie mays had wrote "Say Hey Kid". My sticker& Card # are GP099324. It's very possible that he did write "say hey". on the bat. It only makes my jersey more rare to hear others say that he dosen't sign w/ insc. but he does if you catch him in a good mode who knows what else he might sign.
I once heard a story that Willie signed autographs by writing his name backwards-- ie: "Mays Willie" Anyone ever hear this story? A salesperson in a Field of Dreams Store told me this.
Digger.
I WAS AT CACHE CREEK CASINO THE DAY AFTER MR. WILLIE MAYS WAS INDUCTED INTO THE CALIFORNIA HALL OF FAME, I WAS CHECKING OUT AND CHECKING OUT TO MY RIGHT WAS THE LIVING LEDGEND HIMSELF. I ASKED FOR HIS AUTOGRAPH, HE LOOKED AT ME SKEPTICKLY, PULLED OUT HIS OWN SHARPIE AND SIGHNED MY CHECK OUT RECIEPT. IT'S NOT AS NEAT AS OTHERS IVE SEEN BUT I DON'T CARE! ITS WILLIE MAYS!!!!
