Kobe & Shaq Ball Likely Not Genuine

PSA looked at the Kobe & Shaq ball listed below and rendered it Likely Not Genuine which is not surprising as the signatures are pretty bad.

Having said that, we need to make a very important statement about PSA-DNA Quick Opinions.

1. PSA is the premier authenticating service in the industry and they do an excellent job with authentication.

2. The Quick Opinion service is exactly as its name suggests -- a very "quick opinion". Remember, someone is looking at an image on the Internet for a very short period of time and giving their opinion on it.

3. Just because PSA says that something is Likely Not Genuine, doesn't mean that they have taken the time to analyze the autograph with detail and with the proper due dillegence.

4. We have seen real-life examples from our readers who have submitted authentic signatures without holograms or any other accompanying COA to the Quick Opinion service and PSA has declared them Likely Not Genuine (remember these are real, authenticated signatures from private signings).

So is PSA always right? Absolutely not. It is a good place to start because they are going to be able to pick off the obvious fakes. But the Quick Opinion service is not the end-all to autograph authentication. You should still go through the many steps we suggest in this blog to determine if an item is questionable or not.

We looked at a Mickey Mantle signed jersey they had on their site for $175 and although we can't see the signature, we can't see why anyone would sell a Mantle jersey for $175. A current player would sell for more than that.

They are also selling a Johnny Unitas signed picture for only $54!

Yes, we would like to see a close up. We are not saying the sig is fake because obviously we can't see it on the site, however the pricing is very suspicious. Most legitimate Mantle items are from Upper Deck and if you had an authentic Mantle autographed jersey, you wouldn't sell it for $175.

Looking at the rest of the items on their site leads to further questions about authenticity.

As always we would welcome the seller to comment on the blog to give their point of view as we would never want to be unfair to anyone. We just want to help the consumer make better sports memorabilia choices.

I also viewed the website of signaturedreams.com and many of the autograph items are suspect. I would be particularly suspect of the Mickey Mantle items. The first question that must be asked is "Why would anyone sell a Mickey Mantle autographed jersey for only $175.00?" The second question would be "How were they able to acquire so many Mickey Mantle autograph items?" Did you also check out the Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio and Thurman Munson autographed game-used baseball? Anyone with any common sense has to ask "How they acquired all of those so-called high-end autograph items?" Interesting also that they don't accept authentication by PSA. Think about it.

would authentic-graph3 be the same people ( using an alias) authentigraph and also authitic-graph2? I just bought a couple items from them with confidence after comparing their autos to my AUTHENTIC ones i have collected over the years from Steiner/PSA/Mounted Memories etc.But after reading a blog from here roughly 6 months ago i'm kinda leary on these sigs and will imediatly have them authenticated by a third party to verify and get my money back if said items deem to be fake. Why don't we hear of dealers who have had items returned or deemed not authentic. You would think that Steiner/PSA/Mounted Memories etc would someway divise a system to inform the public on the items that they deem non authentic and the companies it came from.A monthly letter , a web page , something to inform the public. And you would think that the sporting community ie the NFL/NBA even down to the players themselves would want to try and regulate some aspect of this.Instead of you having a item deemed non authentic from PSA and then sending it back to where bought it , getting your money back and then just having them turn around and re-sell the product once again. These items should be destroyed and a refund given back to the buyer and having that company redflagged for selling a non authentic item. The forgery business STARTS & STOPS at the sellers hands. If there was a governing body regulating the sellers and having the sellers liable for selling forgeries then i would bet anything that sellers would pay closer attention to the products they have and sell.I know this is America and all but as history of America has told us over and over again everything has to be regulated or you'll just have chaos. The wild west shot everyone and everything they could untill a govering agency was formed by the name of the FBI. Oil prices would be 100.00 a gallon if it wasn't for a govering body overseeing it.Even down to your children being taught at school, what is annie from colorodo going to learn differently than say erica from florida if you didn't have a schoolboard that answered to a national board that sets the rules.Sorry to blabber but forgery WILL NEVER BE SOLVED unless the sellers are held accountable and fined for a higher vaule that what the item sold for.
